Avi Haviv

Music has taken singer-guitarist Avi all over the world. He studied classical guitar with a master in Tel Aviv,  jazz at the Guitar Institute of Technology in Los Angeles, and funk in the London scene of the late 70’s.  He’s played classic rock on the Australian circuit, toured Asia with contemporary hits, delivered both covers and original music to audiences in America’s Bay and Pacific Northwest regions, and once even played traditional music with a tribe of former headhunters deep in the rainforests of Borneo.

Versatile Veteran

TeenageAvi

Veteran musician Avi Haviv is a citizen of the world thanks to music. As a child prodigy  he began studying classical guitar under a Master trained by Segovia and was gigging professionally by the age of 14 (forbidden to leave the stage during breaks because he was not old enough to be in the clubs he was playing). As a very young adult, Avi relocated to London for several years, absorbing the culture and musical styles of the funky metropolis in the late 1970’s. A move across the pond came when he was accepted into Los Angeles’ prestigious Guitar Institute of Technology. There he studied jazz under greats including Joe Pass and Larry Carlton.

Upon graduation Avi relocated yet again, to the thriving Australian music scene. He was soon ensconced on the lively and rowdy Aussie touring circuit, playing 300+ shows a year as one half of an enormously popular acoustic duo with local Kiwi celebrity Darryl Lovegrove. The twosome, called DNA Expose, appeared live on Good Morning Australia (the Aussie version of Good Morning America) some half dozen times throughout the nineties.

In 1997, singer Anna Maria LaSpina invited Avi to join her for a three month duo engagement in Kuala Lumpur. Neither of them realized Malaysia would hold life-changing events for them both! While there in the duo with Avi, Anna learned she had been added to the Australian rising sensation band Savage Garden on their first international tour.  She went from her duo with Avi to sold-out stadiums of screaming fans around the world. Avi, meanwhile, met an American anthropologist on a Fulbright out of UC Berkeley and wound up ibanshifting from his duo with Anna in the modern capitol city of Kuala Lumpur to anthropological research sites in the depths of the Borneo rainforests and impromptu performances with tribes of former Iban headhunters (yes, really!)

Avi and his anthropologist eventually wed  and later settled in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, where they now reside happily with their child, two dogs, and a flock of chickens.  Globetrotting Avi currently delights audiences at local venues, functions and private events in and around Portland and Southwest Washington, and teaches guitar to children and adults.
